From time to time people leave comments on my Myrtle Beach Real Estate blog, or on twitter that I have absolutely no idea what they mean. I feel at times that I need Ralphie's magic Ovaltine Decoder from the movie A Christmas Story just to understand it.
I believe one of the reasons I am behind on the lingo is the fact that I do not use text messaging. On my cell phone plan, I have unlimited anytime minutes. Also, with the recent addition of my blackberry, I also have email capabilities.
So, when I see someone sends me a text message, I delete it and either email or call the person. My plan charges me $.10 per message I either view or send.
While that doesn't seem like a lot, if I received/sent 10 messages a day that would add over $350 to my phone bill each year. So, with that being said, back to my dilemma of not understanding the text message lingo.
Today I received one of these abbreviations which made me finally have to stop and decypher. Since I had a few minutes, I headed directly to Google to search and see what info I could find. I figured, if I have no clue, there has to be many others out there that do not understand and somewhere there has got to be some sort of list of abbreviations.
Here were a few of the abbreviations I have received over the last few weeks with no clue what they meant:
- GBU- God Bless You!
- DHU- Dinosaur Hugs (used to show support)
- IMHO- In My Humble Opinion
- JIC- Just in Case
Whild doing some research I found a great resource for many of the text chat lingo. It was at webopedia.com. To view their full list of text chat lingo, click here. As I began reading the list, some of the secret decoder phrases that kids are using really shocked me. As a parent you may want to familarize yourself with these. Here are just a few:
- PAW- Parents are Watching
- POS- Parent over shoulder
- TDTM- Talk dirty to me.
Unfortunately, some of the others you find on the list may shock you to. So if you have a child who seems to do a whole lot of text messaging, you may want to keep this list handy. For me, this list has become very beneficial in understanding some of the text chat lingo of the world as well as confirmed that as my daughter grows older, she will have very close supervision of any electronic devices she has by daddy.
