The concept of getting your website to the first page of Google seems like an almost impossible task to many. People spend months writing 
more and more content for their site, getting backlinks, and editing things without ever getting your website to the first page of Google. You feel defeated when your site stays on page 17 and just won't budge. Then one day you get a call from a company who promises “if you give us $395.00 per month, we will put your site on the first page of Google.” The part that these telemarketers neglect to mention is that the moment you stop paying them, your website will drop faster than lead balloon. As a former real estate agent, I used to get these calls regularly.
So, how can you actually get your website to the first page of Google? Well, there are a couple of really basic principles that you’ll need to implement. The “basics” are just that – basic. Before I share these, first you need to learn to not over-complicate things. Here are 3 easy steps to getting your website to the first page of Google:
1. Good, solid, keyword-rich content. So what is quality keyword-rich content? Basically, it’s content that gives something of value to consumers and search engines. You need to have keyword-rich posts that answer the questions your consumers have. Do not just spit out some random words and call it a post. If you write just to write and do not really have purpose, you are basically wasting your time if you are trying to get business. Develop a gameplan for your content and stick to it.
Ten well-written, targeted, keyword dense posts will bring a greater result than 100 posts that are thrown together quickly, with topics all over the place, and which contain piles of typos, grammatical errors, and more. This is a prime example of the principle of quality over quantity for the greatest result possible.
2. Writing Consistently on Your Blog. Many times people start working on getting their website to the first page of Google and after the first month or so they simply give up. One of the key factors to getting your website on the first page of Google is to consistently offer fresh content on your site. The easiest way to do this, of course, is to integrate a blog into your page.
You don’t need to have a Masters degree in English to have an effective blog. You just need to publish 2-3 good, quality posts each week that offer valuable content to your readers that are also written with your primary keywords in mind. One of the biggest excuses that I hear is that a business does not have time to write. According to HubSpot, businesses who blog receive 55% more visitors than companies who do not.
Here’s a simple time management strategy: On the weekend or whenever you have a few spare hours, (watching a football game, relaxing by the fire, etc.), sit down and write 2 or 3 really good quality posts. Then, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you can launch these pre-written posts. You can then take the rest of the week to respond to comments, etc. To the consumers and search engines, it appears as though you have written new content on three different days.
This practice is far healthier for your rankings than writing a bunch of content one day, then waiting 7-10 days to write more. Why? The search engines are constantly visiting your page to index more content. The freshness is important when it comes to Google’s indexing algorithm. Also, they see a constant stream of new stuff instead of a bunch on one day, then a week of dormancy until you get around to posting again. This is also helpful for your consumer audience of readers. If you publish 3-4 posts all at once, the likelihood of those posts bringing you good consumer traffic from those subscribed to your blog is minimal. Most consumers will read maybe one post, but will not have the time, attention span, or energy to read multiple posts.
3. Link, Link, Link! The more sites that are pointing links at your page (especially when titled with the keywords you are 
trying to achieve) will produce a great return. One easy way to get some great links pointing to your site is to make sure you have added your business site to your profiles on any and all networks you participate in. Links from higher ranking sites help the search engines realize that these sites recognize your website.
It is kind of like when Oprah endorsed KFC’s new grilled chicken promo. In no time, there were over 2 million coupons printed and many were left missing out on the promotion because of lack of supply. Links from reputable sites make your own site seem more reputable.
One thing for sure, you need to make positive that the links you insert places are actually working for you. Many networks block the search engines from following the links to prevent spam. (I will be writing more about this in the future.)
Another great way to get links, is to ask your friends and family members to place a link on their blogs, websites, etc. Two things with regards to linking: do not pay a link farm service. Search engines don’t value these links – I could go into great detail about why, but just rest assured that it’s a waste of time and money. The other tip is to not do a reciprocal link when possible. This means, if your brother links to your site, do not put a link back to his.
A detour. An easy alternative to reciprocal links is to have a link triangle. In this case, your brother links to your site, you link to your parents, and your parents link to your brother’s page. All links are one-way and none are going back and forth. The more links you can have pointed at your site, the better it will help in getting your website to the first page of Google. You can think of each link as a “vote” for your site.
If you implement just these three tips, it will help get your website onto the first page of Google. Obviously, there are plenty of other factors that contribute to this phenomenon. If you take these and not only integrate into your website, but also into your blog, the most vital part to your website, you will start seeing results in a rather quick fashion. These three items I discussed alone can make or break the effectiveness of a website.

Jeremy - With regards to the value of seasoned domain names, if you have owned some domain names for several years, renew annually for one year but have never used the domain (i.e. it either has had no content and is completely blank or simply points back to the registrar), how would Google view the domain name when you start using it?

Indeed. Fresh keyword rich content is the goal. However, don't ever think that Google can be fooled. The content should be natural and not "keyword weighted" content.
The 3-way linking is somewhat powerful. I tried it a couple of years ago and my site went from #33 to #8 in 3 weeks for a specific keyphrase...

I laugh at people that call me and tell me that for an X number of dollars they can have me on the 1st page of Google. Apparently they do not check one's website. I have been on the first page of Google for the last ten years with a simple website.

Kim & Barbara- Reciprocals used to be the way to do it. However a few years back, Google recognized people capitalizing on this and setting up link farms/spamming to accomplish, so they removed that part from the algorithm.

Brian- I believe that they crawl the title of it, but they definitely aren't crawling all the content in the pdf. That isn't a readable format.

If you had a wordpress blog, that could become a subdomain of your website & be done. Unfortunately AR doesn't have that capability right now.

I think that the majority of us who have blogs here would rather not go through the trouble of having to change our current websites in order to create a blog on our website.
Would we be duplicating what we write here on our website blogs? If so, then what would be the purpose of having the extra blog on our website? Is there a way to get our AR blogs/outside blogs integrated into our websites outside of providing a link on our webpage?
How in the world do we write for consumers with keyword rich content consistently if we do not know exactly what consumers are searching for? Google Analytics, Clicky, Sitemeter, etc. only measures the keywords we use and how much traffic is generated with those words to our blogs and websites, not the words that will bring the traffic we seek...or maybe I don't have as firm a grasp on the whole analytics concept...and again, if we are already writing those blogs here, does it defeat the purpose to include that same info seperately on our websites?

Barb- Ask friends, people here on ActiveRain. You will place a link to their site on your blog if they do the same. But go from your AR to their website. Their AR to your website. Then no issues.
Scott- to fully optimize things on your website, you need to have a blog as a part of your site. It needs to be either a page or subdomain of the websites URL. If not, you will not see the juice there. The link pointing from AR helps, but nowhere near as much as good content on your own website. I suggest keeping the AR & having a really nice Wordpress blog integrated into your website.

You are right about setting yourself up to have to continue paying for the SEO results.
That's a concern I would have for people who just use ActiveRain as their only tool for SEO. What happens if ActiveRain is bought out by another company and starts charging much more than they currently do? You stop paying and there goes all of your work.
ActiveRain is like renting some hyperspace real estate. There are great benefits but you're building someone else's internet real estate. You really need to be an owner instead of a renter. Would you spend countless hours fixing up and building on to a home that you are renting when you don't even have a lease?

I was just at RainCamp Dallas, and learned many good things. But nobody mentioned the "spreading out the wealth" theory you discuss (Monday, Wednesday, Friday as opposed to all on one day).
I almost always write my blogs at the end of the week, right before the Sunday cutoff.
Last week, I wrote 8 original blog posts and made 10 comments in 35 minutes. I think they were good, useful posts, too, but it sounds like I hurt their effectiveness by waiting until the last minute.

I have worked hard for years to have the most relevant content on my website at http://www.maureenmegowan.com and I have achieved top of page one rankings for such search terms as "Palos Verdes Real Estate", "South Bay Real Estate", "Top Palos Verdes Realtor", and "Palos Verdes Condos". I always make sure to add a link to my website on my posts to my AR blog, my Wordpress blog and such sites as Trulia, etc. I think the key is the most amount of relevant content. I have far more original content on my site than any of my competitors. There are no shortcuts and no substitute for hard work.

I'm not even sure what it means to get your site to the top of Google. What I mean is this, my blog is www.karensperspective.com. If I type that in on a google search, of course it comes in on the first page of google. How else would someone find it on the first page?

An absolutely a well thought out post and I can't thank you enough for sharing. I consistently struggle with finding the time to write quality posts and when I finally put them on my blog they look way too long for a blog post. Is there a rule of thumb for the length of a post? Perhaps I could be writing shorter posts and getting the same results as long as they are dense with quality content? Maybe i just answered my own question but seriously is there a secret length one should abide by?
While i pick your knowledge, I use Word Press and wonder if it is better to keep the blog as the Landing Page because it is active or to use a static landing page. Which helps your SEO rankings?
Finally, what are your thoughts about hiring ghost writers to package up content for the site to increase the content? I would give them an outline to follow about what i want in the article or blog post. There are some pretty decent writers out there at ELance etc who are very reasonable. This is a just an idea for those of us who struggle with the mighty pen.
I know i'm pushing the envelope with your intellectual generosity but thought perhaps others might be wondering the same thing.

Re: Keywords
Make sure you Localize them, example: Denver, Colorado Homes for Sale - instead of just Homes for Sale.
Pick Three main ones and build your Blog around- those three keywords. Start Another Blog for the next Three. Some People build entire Blogs around one keyword.
You can't Rank for everything- so pick what you really want to rank in. It is usually your specialty(s). This will make it easier and faster to get ranked.
Each Post should be about only one of your Keywords.
Make sure your main Keywords are in the Header and any other sub headers.
Make your Sure Key words are in Your Post Title and Ideally are the the First words you start you post with.
Add Your Keyword Every 200 Words. Don't overdue it. It helps a Little if you Bold them.
Start a Blog in Google and a WP Blog (there Free) and cut and paste your Content there and then add back links back to your main blog. (add a somewhat relevant You tube Video at the bottom) and Google will see it as a unique post. Never link Back.
FYI: Duplicate content only applies if it is on your own blog! You could have 3 different blogs with different IP addresses and Google will see all of them- as unique. If still doubt- full do what I suggest above.
Make sure that your Tags Are Laser Targeted for your Three Keywords.
Jeremy, nailed it on content and consistancy. Google Loves Keyword rich targeted Content. Content is King.

Good info when them you post your link you want them to be from site with a high page rank, classified sites are an excellent way to increase your position on google. press release and article submission sites also are very powerful. and of course blogs and social networking sites. I actually work for one of those $395.00 companies. and it is a great deal but you have to know who you are hiring. I have had so many people tell me they new about seo but did not really know how to drive traffic to a web site. My company helps you develop powerful keywords, post ads to 18 paid and classified sites, writes and then post press release to 50 paid and free press sites, writes and submits articles to 144 article submission sites, and of course creates and writes a blog with good fresh content so It really just matters on who you are buying from and what you are buying, Do your research when you hire someone to do your seo.
The other key I found to really increase my rankings is key word links. So instead of putting

I read most of the comments but not enough time to read them all, so if this got answered earlier I apologize. One neat thing about a wordpress blog on your own site is that you can edit the date of the post and have it show up automatically in the future. So if you have more time today to write three post you can stagger them to show up on your website at various intervals to keep it looking like fresh information on a regular basis. You can even rotate some of your older post back into the spotlight this way as well.

Nice post Jeremy and a bunch of great comments. Joel @ #149 hit a huge one in anchor text. Ben @#147 hit another biggie with niche blogs. Some of my niche domains generated more traffic than my main domain within weeks.
Mistake #1 for most people comes because they skip Step #1: market research. If you are targeting a keyword phrase and don't know the total traffic, keyword competition, and phrase-to-broad match, etc. you are just guessing and guessing is expensive.

Karen- people are constantly searching for homes in your area by a keyword. mean, homes for sale in (location) While your website comes up well for the search of the site name, not many will do that. To see a huge results, we need to make it rank for the terms that buyers and sellers would be using daily in your area. Feel free to contact me for some more in depth information regarding this.
Nat- Wow, a lot of good questions! Let me see how I can answer these in the most concise possible way.
Length- There is no exact formula to the length the posts should be. Obviously too long will lose readers while too short do not give enough good quality content for the search engines to find.
I think keeping the blog will help because it is constantly updating.
To answer your question on Ghost Writing- NO! Don't do it!

Quality over Quantity, Most of the agents in my market are too busy trying to out score the competition on AR with random post about everything but real estate. Puppies, kittens, and birds...Oh My! These post are cute, but they will never put a dollar in your bank account.
My approach is slow and steady, Like the tortise and the hair.
Right on-- there seems to be an army of link-farms out there. I get several invitations to do reciprocal links with them each month, but when I (used to) look at the link to me on their site, it was often buried deep in several pages of links-- no uyse what-so-ever to me. Now, I just delete them.
Great post Jeremy! As you know a good place to look for keywords is Google Adwords. I just recently discovered a place on Adwords to enter my website and have google show me how it is indexed. What an eye opener that was! When I changed my keywords on my site, we are now appearing on page one!
Sandy- Think of links as a vote of your site. It doesn't need to be in the exact industry to be of benefit.

There is some nice information here (as far as it goes). I've found that most agents I talk with have the hardest problem with keyword research. They can write articles all day long about their niche but have a difficult time translating that into something that is helpful on Google. If there was anything to add to all the comments and the post itself it would be that you should be sure that your keywords are targeted, not to Google, but to your potential clients. That way you can't lose.
Chris Richter hit it right on the head when he says Market Research (and part of that research is keyword research). I would say that is probably more important than the three tips in the first place. I have a client that was doing all three of the steps, but was targeting keywords, in his posts, backlinks etc. that was never going to get him the business he wanted. He was targeting keywords that a) nobody searched for and b) even if they did search for it would bring him the wrong kind of client for his niche.
The buzzword in Google is RELEVANCE. How relevant are you? The rest is the icing.
SEO and SEM changes regularly, weekly, sometimes daily. I live right down the street from Google and know many people working there - It's an ongoing thing, always changing. One way links, threeway links, blogs, video, social media. All help better than nothing. The bottom line is that if you have relevant sites or relevant links pointing to your relevant site, you will rank (or show up) for that relevant term.
That means you have to be relevant today AND tomorrow. We're all looking for the shortcut to get us there faster (and these tips will help) So, use what you can while you can, and keep your eye on the real prize. Being relevant with the correct keywords will never hurt.

PS: Are you going to say anything about nofollow links? That's probably the second biggest waste of time - when non-professionals spend time and effort building hundreds of backlinks to find that they DON'T COUNT.
Great post. The only thing I take issue with is that I like posting a wide variety of subjects. I will post about human interest subjects, political viewpoints, personal experiences and business related topics. My children who run our family business www.onthelevelcontractors.com think it's a little silly but then it really hasn't hurt our google positioning as I don't post irrelevant topics on our website. I only post them on AR and Trulia. Is that OK?

If SEO isn't a college degree yet it should be. With that said, I always tell people that there are 3 simply ingredients to top rankings in Google.
1) age of domain
2) quality of onsite content
3) links
Whose blog is it? Is it okay to curse on your website? You are in the marketplace. So what does the marketplace say? Not anyone here. YOUR marketplace. I by that I mean, what are you selling on your blog? And who are you selling it to? You can talk about different things to different people? If your target audience is senior nuns you would have different topics on your blog than if your target audience was auto repair guys in their twenties.
Remember, you are selling your service, but really you are also selling you. So if your target audience is interested in humand interest subjects, your political viewpoint, your relevant personal stories etc. and it floats your boat, go ahead write about it. But will having those posts help you with search traffic? No. Not if it is irrelevant to your keywords.
But is it okay?
Yes. Of course it is. If it helps you get potential clients to know, like and trust you, it's good. Everything has got to be a balance. Your posts need to appeal to two targets: your target audience and search engines (which realy means Google) So every post needs to appeal to one or the other (or if possible to both) Don't worry if one of your posts is off topic. But if you are consistently off topic, you risk losing your relevance.
Then perhaps it is time to seperate your personal blog from your professional blog. Only you can decide, though. Write down what your specific target audience is and write down your specific niche and start there.

Good tips Jeremey. What about 2 way links if one of the links "does not follow?"
I ghost write for several clients that are small business owners. It's better that something is written vs. nothing at all on the blog. I will, however, get a feel for their "voice" before writing for them.
If you're going to get someone to ghost write, make sure they're writing original content, and not just copy+pasting other people's articles / blog posts and claiming it is original. Duplicate content hurts your ranking, not to mention the whole plagiarism aspect!

No offense to you, but I am not a fan of the ghost writers for the simple fact that while they can become close to the voice of the blog author, they cannot be the same. I just simply feel it is always best to have content from the author, not someone else impersonating them.
Valid points on the plagiarism, duplicate content and unique content. If they aren't doing that for you, then it is more harm than help! Something written is definitely better than nothing at all too. Thanks for sharing.
Jeremy offers some good basic advice, but don't forget if it were that simple everyone would be on page 1 of the Google serps. There are only 10 *organic* results per page for any given KW, and most people spend far too much of their time trying to optimize their site *page(s)* for the most competitive KW phrase: "XXXX real estate". Go after kw's that are far less competitive *we call them long tails* and you'll find your site ranking page 1 much sooner.

Scott- to fully optimize things on your website, you need to have a blog as a part of your site. It needs to be either a page or subdomain of the websites URL. If not, you will not see the juice there. The link pointing from AR helps, but nowhere near as much as good content on your own website. I suggest keeping the AR & having a really nice Wordpress blog integrated into your website.
Now, here is where I need help, I do not know how to put a blog page on my web site, is this something someone like you can do?

Rick Maday- Having a news feed send content into your website really doesn't help that much because the content is being fed to hundreds of sites with content that is not unique. Also, the only place really benefiting from that is whoever is the originator of the content. The publisher is the source and gets the credit.

Good points Jeremy. I agree that reciprocal linking is useless and easy to spot.
But you encourage people to take, "A detour. An easy alternative to reciprocal links is to have a link triangle."
Note: Merriam-Webster: DETOUR: a deviation from a direct course or the usual procedure; especially : a roundabout way temporarily replacing part of a route.
I disagree with 3-way linking (also easy for Google to spot), but note what Google says: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66356 , meaning any manipulation (and 3-way links are an "intention to" manipulate) of SERPs is mis-guided advice.
Brett- I humbly disagree. Three way links are not misguiding. They are a good way to link. There is nothing saying that is bad practice, or things wrong. Sorry you feel I am giving mis-guided advice. As for manipulating, there is no such things. My point was simply this. Instead of linking from my page to yours & your page to mine, link from one of mine to yours and you link to a different page. That is one way links and is totally within the guidelines stated.
Great post, You explain the process very well and make the think that is is something I would be able to do if I was consistent. Of course that has been the problem in the past, staying with it, I suppose that is why the top agents are the top agents! I like the idea of writing more than one post at a time and then saving them.
another good way to get backlinks (links to your site) is to write articles and post them on free site such as ezinearticles.com. this is a high traffic website and will definitely help your page rank. be sure to include a link back to your website at the end of each article.

Paul #237 You're ActiveRain blog will give you links back to your main site. Also ActiveRain has a lot of new content and has a high page rank that transfers to the main site you choose to link to.
Getting family members to put a link on their site is all well and good except. The family members site needs to be about real estate to get maximum benefit. You will be better off in the long run creating other sites your self and building up page rank for the sites you can control and control what is blogged on them.
#2 and #4 Yeah I have seen things rank fast also then when I look at how many searches they get it ends up not worth being number one. That is a big SEO company trick. I can get # one for the keyword phrase "underwater real estate basket weaving ninja" How often do you think it gets searched? Some agents get number one not knowing that the phrase will not generate enough traffic to convert any leads. AS for a quick ranking tip. Get enough people to click on a link for you and you will get number one. Twitter is a good place for this. With enough followers clicking on a link it will get ranked fast. Of course it needs to be indexed (found by google)first.
#195 Some long tail keywords are not worth grabbing by the tail so that can be a waste of time also.(see above)
RealBird is a good way to build links and I will be doing a video on it in the coming weeks.
#14 After a certain period you will lose domain age and page rank and have to start over. The best thing to do, if you own a lot of domains is to get a hosting account and set up a wordpress blog for every domain you own. Also if you point a domain to another site you are not earning page rank or domain name. The URL(www.mysite.com) has to be set up with name servers to start building domain age and page rank.
Thanks Jeremy - good stuff! The link back strategy is the toughest to achieve - especially if not doing reciprocal links. Nevertheless, it is important. I am soon ready to launch my new website, and providing incentives to other sites to link to mine is an area where I need to spend some significant thought and brainstorming.

I challenge all of you to look at and explore a website called A Greatertown that has some great GOOGLE JUICE. The impact it makes on Google is remarkable. I am not good at tech data or how things happen. I can tell you that it works.
Example: I have found a site called www.agreatertown.com where I could add post with rich content and in some times less than 24 hours these topics are on the top page of Google.
If it works just share this data with others or talk to the owner about other opportunities.

Integrating my blog prominently on my website helps it have new content consistently and I see it moving up in Alexa rankings all the time. Before doing this, new content, new front page images wasn't consistent.
