Something New for my Puppy

With my wife being pregnant with our first child, my mother-in-law knew it was time to do something to help with walking our dog Hannah. Hannah is a 1 1/2 yr old Yellow Lab.  For those of you that have ever owned a lab, you know they can be rather hyper as puppies.  She is as sweet as can be, and loves to play and run.  When she was younger, my wife would take her running while she used her rollerblades.  But, at 8 months pregnant that has obviously stopped months ago.  So, we needed a solution to walk Hannah to get her energy out without her pulling everywhere epecially when my wife tries to walk her with the baby stroller after birth.

Now there are many different things out there that you could get.  I could've bought a typical choke collar.  Or, one with spikes on it.  However, I have had those in the past, and was not impressed with how they work.  And, I don't think they are very comfortable for the dog.  So, instead, my mother-in-law did a little research and found a great product.

The Product is called Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness.  It is manufactured by Premier.  Here is the product description from their site:

The Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness is designed to gently discourage your dog from pulling while walking on a leash.

Why it works:

Traditional harnesses can actually encourage dogs to pull harder because of the "opposition reflex."  That's the reflex that makes sled dogs do what they do. The Easy Walk Harness' unique front-chest leash attachment stops pulling by tightening slightly across your dog's chest and shoulder blades. The gentle pressure steers your dog to the side and redirecting his attention back towards you. The Easy Walk Harness never causes coughing, gagging, or choking because the chest strap rests low across the breastbone, not on the delicate tracheal area.

Since using it, Hannah walks right beside us and does not pull.  And, she absolutely loves wearing the harness.  If she sees me pick it up, she gets all excited to have it put on and go for a walk!!!

Thank you for the info.  I have two German Shephards.  One is calm and easy to walk, of course he is almost 10 years old.  The female is almost 5 and likes to drag me down the street.  So this will come in handy.

Perhaps I should look into this - I have a 5 year old irish setter and walking him is pretty much like Marlin fishing! I think my right arm is longer than my left! His name is Patrick. I also wrote another blog about Distractions while your are blogging. (of course I am referencing my dog Patrick).

Let us know if you have a boy or girl!

I have used a harness on my dog for years now and love it.  When she was younger she would pull and be choking herself if she had any kind of collar on.  We switched to harness and retractable leash which works great.  I would not use anything else.

Pretty cool.  Thanks for the info on the harness.  Congrats to you and your wife.

Kathryn- Hopefully less dragging will happen now.

Sharon- Maybe before using this, you should walk Patrick with your left arm for a while.  And, we are having a girl- Isabelle Grace.

Kim- I love my lab!  THey are great dogs!!!

Linda- I am glad it works well for you, I am sure I will love it for years to come.

Rob- Thanks for the congratulations!!!

I'm glad you found something that works for you. It's not a lot of fun to be pulled in every direction. Most people don't realize this, but when your dog is walking you, it puts them in the "alpha" position. They are the boss at that moment and are in control. It's funny how our dogs have us trained better than we train them. Beautiful dog, by the way.

Lissa  I totally agree...we have tried to implement the theories of Cesar Milan with our dog.  So far they are working well.
