Yesterday I had the great pleasure of spending the entire day at a local hospital with a friend. As the day came to an end, a few of my friends said they wanted to go by the nursery and see the babies. So, since I had been sitting in the same room for many hours, I agreed to go along on the journey. When we arrived at the nursery, we began to all ooh and ahh over the little babies. Then, a sign hanging in the background caught my attention. Unfortunately I was not close enough to see the complete details, but I could definitely read the big bold title. It said:
Striving for Excellence! Our Goal is 60%!!!
At first this sign struck me humorous but then began to sadden me. I thought to myself, "when did 60% become excellence?" I remember in high school 60% was a failing grade on an exam. I did receive a few of these during my time in high school and they were definitely not the tests I ran home to put on the refrigerator to brag to mom & dad about. I kept trying to figure out how their level of excellence can be achieved at 60%.
If the number was really high like 95% or above, that would represent excellence. An example might be something like: We scored a 95% or higher on our recent patient satisfaction surveys. On the other hand, if this number was really low like below 3% I could see it representing excellence as well. This would be the case for something like for the past 10 years we have achieved a level of excellence by having less than 3% of our patients file a lawsuit.
I then began to think about my real estate exam. Unfortunately the minimum score was only a 70% to pass. To me, that is not a level of excellence but rather level of mediocrity. I remember when I took my exam for my license that many in my class were ecstatic to just pass with a 73% score. Mine was a 94% and I was rather upset with myself.
I guess that is one of the reasons I have managed to remain successful as a Myrtle Beach Real Estate agent. One of the things that my father & I have always pressed for is being the most successful real estate agents possible. We are continually taking more classes to keep ourselves educated and always looking for new ways of selling Myrtle Beach Real Estate.

well one way to look at is that in baseball , 30% makes you and all star. and 40% would make you the best of all-time. :)
Jeremy, I understand the laymen reading such as this sign in the hospital.I think with out knowing what the premise of that unit it could be simple things not directly relating to patient care. It could annual back safety inservice. Your friend the patient should be in good hands. As far as real estate goes your right about what your client say about you.

They must be trying to discourage business at the maternity ward.
If 60% is their 100 then we're cool. I hope they aren't striving for 60% w/the babies satisfaction?

Frank- I am not sure what it was for, but in a nursery area I dont know...I just can't fathom 60% being excellence anywhere in a hospital.

My parents would be in jail if I brought home any thing less than 80%. Why? Because child abuse didn't mean anything in my day but murder did!!
Jeremy - There is a statistic called Net Promoter Score. It basically accounts for the difference between the number of people who think so highly of you that they become tell others about you and the number of people who were disappointed in your service. (The people who don't have a stron opinion aren't counted). Using this score, 70% is world-class service and most companies are satisfied between 50 and 60%. I don't know if this is what you saw, but it could explain the sign.
Jeremy, I agree that what's up with 60%?? In most areas that is a FAILING grade.
Jeremy - decent post - but I think I learned more about advertising myself in this blog post then actually reading it! That's cool - thanks. I do agree about the scores and % though - - - then people have the nerve to BOAST about their marginally passing scare, haha.
The bar has definitely dropped hasn't it? How sad is that? If anything we should continuously be raising the bar on standards of service and excellence! We as a society have become complacent and apathetic accepting mediocrity as the 'norm'......Nobody likes to say 'thats just not cutting the mustard'........nobody wants to actually hold someone accountable for being the very best they can be. But we sure like to complain about it a lot...;-) - and that means all of us!
